Barnsley Baptist Church

Our Church

Who we are

We are a warm and welcoming fellowship with members living in and around the town of Barnsley. We come from a wide variety of backgrounds but are united by our beliefs, commitments, our love for one another and a deep desire to serve our Lord and to shine Christ’s light into His world and be a place of fellowship and refuge. Theologically we are a conservative evangelical church holding to the beliefs and commitments set out below. A Christian community has been worshipping at Barnsley Baptist Church for almost 180 years, 55 years in the current building and our hope is to continue this into the future.

Our beliefs and commitments are:

  • We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who was born of a virgin, that He died for our sins on the Cross, was bodily resurrected and lives forever.
  • We believe in one God who has one nature but in the unity of the Godhead there are three eternal and co-equal Persons, the Father, the Son and the Spirit.
  • We have a personal belief in God through Jesus Christ and want to grow in this relationship through the Holy Spirit.
  • We love God and want to express this love in our worship, both together and in our daily lives.
  • We believe that the Bible is the Holy Spirit inspired word of God and is infallible. We desire more and more to learn from it and grow in the likeness of our Saviour and live it out in our lives.
  • We are a ‘Fellowship of Believers’ and so we want to show Christian love and care for one another throughout our church, and to see each other develop as Christians.
  • God’s love for all the world is so great that He sent Jesus to die as its Saviour, and we want to play our part in making this Good News known, locally and in the wider world.
  • We recognise that we live in a community with a range of needs – social, financial and spiritual, and realise that Christian people are called to show Christ’s compassion. We want to respond to the opportunities the Lord opens to us, trusting in Him.
  • We believe two ordinances have been given to the church universal by the command of Jesus Christ namely, baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper

Our Church History

The Barnsley Baptist Church was originally known as Sheffield Road Church and commenced under that name in 1845 when Mr. John Wood, a glass manufacturer of Barnsley, attended the Baptist Association meeting and expressed his concern for the needs of the town. This resulted in the coming of a student-paster, John Law-who preached in the town and on Worsbrough Common-a notoriously godless locality. The only Christian family on the Common opened its cottage for services.  A church building was constructed on one of the corners of Sheffield Road and Union Street. The church experienced God's blessings and grew, at one stage having a Sunday School of 300 children.

Due to the council widening of Sheffield Road in 1969, the church building was relocated across Union Street where a new building was constructed. The Church remains at this site.

Our Beliefs

Baptists believe everyone, ordained or lay, is responsible before God for his/her own understanding of God's word and what it means to them. That means that in Baptist churches which appoint a minister, he or she is an equal member in the church meeting but with special responsibilities as outlined by the congregation.

We seek to be a loving, friendly community that worships God, and serves others. We place a high priority on teaching from the Bible and following the example of Jesus. We meet each week to worship together and at other times for Bible study, prayer and fellowship.
